Should I Have a Job in College?
As you prepare to head into your sophomore year, you might be thinking if you should
consider getting a job during the next academic year, or maybe you are wondering if
you should step away from working while in college. Regardless of which way you might
be leaning, there are some important things you should consider, such as time management,
your upcoming academic courseload, and resume benefits. Keep reading to see if having
a job in college is for you!
Time Management. Adding another addition to your schedule can be overwhelming. Being able to prioritize
and act on what is most important in your schedule is key in college. If you鈥檙e considering
getting a job, are you able to fit the hours required to work in your schedule? You
have to ensure any job you may get also has to work around your class schedule! This
is the perfect time to sit down and write out hours you can confidently work and see
what jobs are available to you.
Resume-Building. Building your resume can be a key focus for many students in college. Adding more
and more hard-working jobs will allow employers to know how well-rounded you are and
be able to acknowledge your time management skills. While building your resume is
not a requirement in college, it is a key focus when trying to get a career post-grad.
Many students enjoy making connections to their employers or coworkers and have a
multitude of recommendations letters at their fingertips! This is definitely something
to consider when thinking about getting a job in college.
Stress. Being a college student, you know the feeling of stress before an exam, trying to
balance your schedule, or just in your everyday life. Adding a job into the mix of
all of this can cause immense stress for many students. If you鈥檙e already feeling
overwhelmed by balancing what you have now, maybe prioritizing your scheduling is
more important for you than getting a job. Other students may not feel as stressed
by adding a job into their schedules, and you may feel this way too! Sit down and
evaluate how you would feel adding something else to balance throughout your week.
On-Campus Jobs. Are you considering a job but don鈥檛 know where to start? Getting an on-campus job as a student gives you the luxury of a stress-free plan between you and your employer. A university faculty member is going to understand your class schedule and prioritizing your academics first. This allows you to easily be able to schedule your hours around your class schedule and not have to worry about falling behind in your classes! Another perk of considering an on-campus job would be the location. You can easily walk from your morning class to your four-hour shift all on campus. On-campus jobs are definitely something to consider when choosing your next career!
Having a job in college is going to look different for each student. When considering a job, you have to take into account the time management and stress of adding something additional to your schedule. For some students it is easy, and for others it is difficult to balance it all. Sit down and see how you would feel adding another element into your schedule!
